Livingstones Kabinet are a unique band with a loyal following in Copenhagen, Denmark, and a growing audience in Britain.
The band is fronted by Nina Kareis and Pete Livingstone, who started performing together in the crypt under an Edinburgh church surrounded by Scottish belly dancers, stilt-walking freaks, cigar-smoking angels and other performers such as The Tigerlillies, Kenny Young & the Eggplants and a troupe of Dutch tango dancers.
They play a battery of accordions, piano, violin, mouth trumpet and pump organ, performing intense and passionate songs about prime numbers, Soviet strippers,Charles Bukowski and Danish ponds - her voice dark, smoky and teutonic like a fallen cabaret diva, he with the dress sense of an Armenian pimp and a clear, angelic singing style. Sometimes they are joined by their potent drummer, Søren Møller, and double bass player, Casper Ludvigsen. Lately the legendary 'Huhahu Male Voice Choir' have also been part of making the Kabinet an even more wonderful place to visit. Their music is a rag-bag mixture of Weimar blues, limping polka and East European music hall with lyrics which reflect their playfully twisted worldview - exquisitely crafted vignettes that linger in the memory like some of those deeply strange moments from a David Lynch film. Clearly this Kabinet also plays host to some pretty malevolent beasties. Though difficult to categorise, and therefore beyond commercial success, they have both initiated and participated in various theatre, dance and performance productions in Denmark, UK and the US. The companies they have worked with include: Benchtours Productions (UK), Melanie Stewart Dance Theatre (USA), Kaleidoskop Theatre (DK), Limfjordsteatret (DK), Cafeteatret (DK). Pete Livingstone has also composed scores for some of the theatrical "big boys" such as: The Royal Theatre (DK), Betty Nansen Theatre (DK), and Traverse Theatre (UK). Meanwhile Livingstones Kabinet continue performing their magical kabaret koncerts in Denmark, Britain and elsewhere. |
